How does the YMCA partnership work?

The Lake Nona YMCA's 30,000-square-foot family center is inside the school building, so students can move from class to Y programs without leaving campus.

The arrangement dates to the start of Northlake Park itself. When Lake Nona Property Holdings broke ground on the neighborhood, it agreed with the school district and the YMCA to build a combined school and Y at the outset: roughly 130,000 square feet, with a shared entrance and lobby, surrounded by athletic fields for students and residents. The plan was for the district to pay a user fee at first and, after five years, the remainder of the building's $8.6 million cost.

In practice, the YMCA says students can stay on campus until 7:00 p.m. for swim teams, sports, performing arts and music classes, which means parents don't have to leave work early to drive children between school and activities. When Kathleen Kennedy Townsend visited and wrote about the school for The Atlantic, she described it as the first arrangement of its kind in the nation. According to the principal's message, the dress code was agreed on by the community when the school was founded. The school also runs the Ron Clark house system: every student is placed in a house for their whole time at NorthLake Park, and house shirts are worn on Tuesdays. Why is enrollment lower than it used to be?

NorthLake Park was one of the schools affected by a rezoning the School Board approved in May 2019, which took effect in August 2020. Enrollment fell to 645 that first year and has stayed in the 600s since. A smaller enrollment is not a sign of a weaker school; it reflects Lake Nona adding elementaries around it.
