Why was Innovation Middle School built?

Innovation Middle was built to relieve Lake Nona Middle School, which by 2015 had far more students than it was designed for.

When construction was announced in 2015, reporting noted that Lake Nona Middle had been built for 1,235 students and had 1,816. The new school was planned as a 175,332-square-foot building on 26 acres, budgeted at $36.8 million, with room for 1,348 students, and construction was set to begin in January 2016. It opened in 2017, the same year the school gives as its founding.
