A par-73 public course with British-style bunkering, Mini-Verde greens and a clubhouse that doubles as a wedding venue

The clubhouse at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Lake Nona

Eagle Creek Golf Club is a public 18-hole course at 10350 Emerson Lake Blvd in Orlando's Lake Nona area, designed by Ron Garl and Howard Swan and opened in May 2004. It plays to par 73 and 7,196 yards from the black tees, with a 74.1 rating and 132 slope, and has five sets of tees. The layout has more than 60 bunkers with bulkhead faces modeled on Scottish and English courses, and Mini-Verde greens. The course is an Audubon International Silver Signature site and hosted the 2006 Florida Open. A 14,000-square-foot clubhouse holds the pro shop, locker rooms and the 120-seat Belfry Restaurant.

Eagle Creek is the championship course in Lake Nona that anyone can play. The private club down the road gets the LPGA, but Eagle Creek takes public tee times on a championship-length layout that runs through one of the area's largest neighborhoods.

Here's what the course is like, which tees to play, what's at the clubhouse and how it stacks up against the other two courses in the area.

What is Eagle Creek Golf Club like to play?

It is a long, bunker-heavy par 73 with British and American design influences, fast Mini-Verde greens and wetlands and lakes along many holes.

Ron Garl and Howard Swan designed the course for developer Emerson International, and it opened in May 2004. The signature look is the bunkering: more than 60 white-sand bunkers, many with dramatic bulkhead faces borrowed from Scottish and English links. The front nine plays to par 36 and the back to par 37.

Eagle Creek was the first course in Florida to use Mini-Verde on its greens, a fine-bladed Bermuda that putts fast. Golf Digest gave it 4.5 stars in 2006, the magazine's highest rating for a Florida course at the time.

What's at the Eagle Creek clubhouse?

The 14,000-square-foot, two-story clubhouse has a full pro shop, men's and women's locker rooms and the 120-seat Belfry Restaurant.

The clubhouse is built in a New England manor style, and the Belfry doubles as a private venue for weddings, banquets and corporate events. Practice facilities include a two-sided driving range and a practice hole with bunkers.

Which tees should you play at Eagle Creek?

Most mid-handicap golfers belong on the whites at 6,841 yards; the blacks play 7,196 yards, long for a par 73.

Eagle Creek Golf Club tees (par 73)
Black 7,196 yards · 74.1 rating / 132 slope
White 6,841 yards · 72.5 / 128
Yellow 6,362 yards · 70.3 / 125
Blue 5,875 yards
Red 5,305 yards · 70.5 / 125

With five tee sets spread across nearly 1,900 yards, the course works for beginners and low handicappers on the same day. Ratings are from the club's published scorecard.

Does Eagle Creek offer lessons?

Yes. The Golf Academy at Eagle Creek offers private lessons, group coaching, women's clinics, junior development and club fitting.

Golf schools and group coaching suit newer players who want structure before tackling the full course, and juniors have their own development program. The academy lists a coaching staff of five on the club's website. Call the pro shop at (407) 273-4653 and choose extension 3 for the academy.

Pros, Cons and Our Take

Pros

  • Public access to a championship-length course with a real design pedigree.
  • Five tee sets make it playable for every level.
  • Full practice facilities and an on-site academy.
  • A clubhouse restaurant that works for a post-round meal or an event.

Cons

  • At 7,196 yards from the tips, the back tees are too long for most amateurs.
  • More than 60 bunkers punish loose iron play.
  • Green fees are not posted in a single rate card; you have to check the booking system.
  • Hours follow daylight, so late-day play shrinks in winter.

Our Take

If you live in Lake Nona and want to play regularly without a private membership, Eagle Creek is the default choice. Play the whites the first time, and bring a sand wedge you trust.
